I believe that longevity consists of two key components:

  1. Lifespan - the total number of years we live.

  2. Healthspan - the number of those years we remain healthy, capable, and free from disease.

While living as long as possible is important, the quality of health and life during those final decades is what truly matters most. Many of us have witnessed firsthand our parents or grandparents living into their 80s or 90s, but with a low quality of life suffering with disease and frailty. Causing pain, frustration, a lack of independence, and even feelings of being a burden on loved ones.

For me personally, experiencing my grandparents' struggle with these issues ignited my passion for longevity and healthspan, which led me to develop The Welltolead Method™.

So, how can we age well and live a long, healthy and physically independent life?

Here' what I think...

Aging comes to us all, manifesting in various ways, but three specific preventable factors underpin the physical decline we experience as we approach midlife and beyond:

  • Age-related muscle loss, commonly known as sarcopenia.

  • A rapid decline in strength and joint health.

  • A reduction in cardiovascular health and capacity.

You might be thinking, “Well, I’m not concerned about having big muscles or being particularly fit or strong.”

The truth is, these three factors affect us all, and have far-reaching consequences if left to develop, impacting all areas of our health - from cardiovascular and metabolic diseases to cancer, cognitive decline, arthritis, fatal falls, weak bones, and much more. It’s clear why these three factors are the leading predictors of healthspan and lifespan.

Did you know that between the ages of 30 and 70, if unaddressed, most people will lose upwards of 30% of their muscle mass, with strength losses of almost 150% of that?

Muscle is a critical organ. Not only is it key for our hormones, but it’s also a metabolic sink that stores the majority of our glucose, playing a crucial role in preventing conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.

Muscle, and more specifically the strength, power, bone density, and joint health that quality muscle creates, also play a vital role in protecting the body. They prevents falls, broken bones, disability, and frailty, allowing you to move independently, pain-free, and with ease.

Statistics show that being in the top 20% of strength for your age results in a threefold reduction in all-cause mortality compared to those in the bottom 20%.

Additionally, if you’re over 65 years old and you fall and break your hip, the probability of mortality within 12 months post-fall is up to 30% - which is staggering.

And it’s not all about muscle, Individuals in the lowest 25% of VO2 max (a measure of cardiovascular fitness) have a threefold higher risk of death compared to those in the highest 25%.

It’s pretty clear…

Building and maintaining quality muscle and a healthy heart during your 30s, 40s, and beyond is especially important for your longevity, overall health, and quality of life.

Think of muscle as your body armour because, in all honesty, it’s the closest thing we have to it.

The good news is, all three of these factors can be addressed, dramatically slowed, and even prevented through the right strategies, actions, and habits.
